Alcohol in campuses

Alcohol is widely abused among the young adults and the students in campuses than among the other populations in the society. Similarly, young people tend to be more affected by risk of taking alcohol because of their active lifestyles. The constant taking of alcohol affects their long-term lives in social, economic, and health aspects (Kapner, 2008). Alcohol changes the way the young people think, react, and make their own decisions. Once a young person indulges in the drinking behavior there are many psychological and social concerns that are affected.

Some of the psychological effects that young people suffer due to alcohol abuse are mental disorders and changes in the endocrine system among other effects (National Institute on Alcohol and Alcoholism, 2000). Alcohol affects the brain development, this leads to subtle changes, which may be difficult to detect. However, this effect is seen later in life when the individuals lose their memory and general thinking capabilities. Alcohol has been suggested to cause changes in the endocrine function (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, 2002).

Several hormonal changes occur among alcohol users. In particular, the balance of sex hormones such as testosterone and estrogen has been identified (Kapner, 2008). This will eventually affect their sexual behavior and often involving them in the sexual activity. Estrogen controls the secondary female characteristics among females while testosterone regulates all the secondary sexual characteristics in males. Some researchers have claimed that beer contains some estrogens and the males who take too much beer have been said to act like females due to the estrogen-like compounds in beer. However, this claim has not been validated.

Alcohol Influence on Young People
Generally, alcohol in the young people leads to changes their behavior and characters from those expected from them by the people around them. It is therefore a society concern since the young people fail to have understanding when instructed by their seniors. The young people tend to have immoral behaviors, social conflicts, and disagreement in families among others (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, 2002). Most of the alcohol addicts take alcohol as a way of reducing their depression. However, this leaves them in the same state and also is more likely to expose them to more dangers of depression and anxiety (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, 2002). At this state the young person can involve himself or herself in some criminal activities to get rid of the depression. Some of the criminal activities involve robbery, killings, smuggling and sale of drugs among others (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, 2000).

The young generation that is mostly affected is basically found in the campuses where there is a strong influence from the peers (Kapner, 2008). This has led to many diverse effects on the lives of the students and also the surrounding members of the society.  Many deaths have occurred in the campuses from the alcohol poisoning and also from the associated accidents caused by alcohol like car accidents and extreme violence (Kapner, 2008). Other forms of the accidents caused by the alcohol addicts are the injuries, vandalism of the school items and the criminal activities that frequently occur to the campus students (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, 2000). Many students find themselves in cases that are very hard to evade, they involve themselves in many tragedies that include date rape crimes, sexual harassment, damage of property, injury to their colleagues, and even death among others.

In addition to the above problems caused by alcohol abuse, the victims face many challenges in life (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, 2000). Those that engage themselves in the criminal activities get arrested and miss the learning process in the campus. Such students are prone of not attending classes during the normal learning hours and even avoid taking their assignments from their lectures this leads to failure in the examinations and eventually the victims drop out of the campus thus ruining their careers in future (Kapner, 2008).

Binge Drinking in Campuses
The students in the campus involve themselves in binge drinking due to peer pressure from their colleagues. This has been one of the most common problems especially among the first years in campus who want to discover more about campus life (Kellogg, 1999). The young people get engaged and get intoxicated with alcohol in a very short time. They enter into other forms of drug abuse including cocaine and marijuana (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, 2000). On the other hand they can use the same drug consistently over a long duration of time. This is dangerous as it accumulates in the blood system of the young person and lead to much intense effects in the long run (Kellogg, 1999).

Solutions
Most of the campuses have enacted some of the rules and regulations that try to reduce the risk of the spread of drug and alcohol abuse among their students. Through this, the universities and campuses are able to find solutions to this problem.  First, to be able to prevent the use of alcohol in the campuses, the universities must implement some policies and programs that curb alcohol and the use of other drugs that are associated with the negative effects (Kapner, 2008).  Then, they must have some broad approaches of preventing the use of the drugs. Some of the programs may include combination of the traditional educational programs and the strategies available in the campus (Kapner, 2008).  Through this process, the students behavior at the multiple levels is recognized and dealt with accordingly.

In addition to the policies implemented in the campus, the policies should be circulated in a way that reaches the entire students body.  An example to this is that a campus can hold an alcohol awareness program and some counseling programs that teach the negative impacts on the drug abuse and try to encourage those affected that they can avoid them ((National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, 2002)).  Finally, the campus can invent a setting that can discourage the high-risk drinking styles in the system and also help those students that do not drink from drinking or those who drink to reduce their drinking habits. This tries to discourage the use of alcohol in the most effective way (Kapner, 208).

Conclusion
In general, alcohol drinking can affect the life of student in campuses which significantly affects their performances in academics and in their future career. The problem extends to the workplace where these students cannot relate well with others.  Therefore, the habit should be avoided to enable the young generation lead normal and perfect lives in order to accomplish their dreams.
