Abnormal Psychology

A persons old age life may be characterized by loss of intellectual functions, which can include memory, aggression delusions, hallucinations and changes in social behavior, commonly known as Dementia disease. Antipsychotic medications are commonly prescribed for the management of this disease. However, these medications often increase risk of mortality and stroke, if proper usage is not implemented (Michel, 2010).

DISCUSSION
The most interesting thing that I learnt from this study is that anti psychotic medication can be used to reduce or rather treat the dementia disease, but only if the medication is taken in controlled measures. If the medication is not carefully monitored, it could lead to adverse effects such as speech diminishing, muscular stiffness, and even increased confusion (Michel, 2010)

This relates to the theory of abnormal psychology which states that drugs have chemical substances, which are brewed from herbs, and have not only the psychological healing behavior, but also produces characteristics changes in feeling and behavior if abused, and thus worsening cognitive (Hollingworth, 2008).

In my personal experience, I have encountered doctors who use the antipsychotic medications in the treatment of dementia, without proper consultation with the relatives of the patients. They take the initiative of claiming to be the one who knows what is best for the patient. However, not all patients who suffer from dementia need antipsychotic medication. This is because patients are not affected in a similar manner, as some experience hallucinations that do not cause distress in their lives.

Therefore, doctors need to weigh the options and consult with the patients relatives before prescribing the antipsychotic medication.

Moreover, they should make sure that the medication prescribed will result to a feeling of self-control, affirm the patient as a unique and a worthy person, and help the patient increase association with his loved ones.
