Common Characteristics of Suicidal Thoughts and Feelings

It is not difficult to identify some of the suicidal thoughts that may be presented by individuals wanting to have suicide. Thought about suicide also known as suicidal ideations are common among the depressed and may occur as a long plan that may not be accomplished by the person wanting to have suicide (Soreff, 2009). Although not all individuals having suicidal thought end up in committing real suicide, they may have attempted suicide.

An individual with suicidal thoughts will have great depression, which can easily be seen in them especially when they do not want to associate with others (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2009). An impaired concentration can best indicate the feeling of suicide as they think much about how to commit suicide than paying attention to the people around them. Signs that may be related to suicidal thoughts can be insomnia, hopelessness, anhedonia and psychomotor agitation (Soreff, 2009).

Individuals with suicidal thoughts may have constant panic attack and may not be sure whether to commit suicide or not (Soreff, 2009). As a result, they may end up asking their friends and loved ones issues and questions regarding death such as, what would you do if I died The individuals may also be seen secluding themselves from others or still give away their belongings since they feel they may not need them if they died (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2010).

It is important to identify these suicidal thoughts and a psychological counselor to be involved in talking to the individual planning to have suicide (Soreff, 2009). Sometimes, the suicidal thoughts result from conflicts in the family or problems in personal lives, which can be shared and solved locally. Therefore, I would hold talks with the individual planning to commit suicide and help the person morally or financially if need be, this would help and reverse the ideations. I would also recommend that the individual sees a psychiatrist.

Suicidal thoughts are dangerous and once identified in individuals, they should be dealt with and the person assisted to avoid them. The involvement of a psychological counselor helps and the interventions of friends to assist the individual having ideations can be of great help.
