Hope Hospital

A hospital newly built on the south side of Chicago based on the skills to provide its patients with the best help, from a team of very professional psychologist.  These psychologists are trained in all areas of study.  One field of study is Psychological Inhibition.  This is the course when a person hides personal problems and unenthusiastic emotions.  Another is Dispositional Optimism. This refers to an overall optimistic position in which one generally expects the future to be good. Health psychologists believe this is connected to a faster revival from illness.  And one more is Explanatory Style this refers to the inclination to give details events in certain ways. One who explains himherself in an encouraging style generally exhibits better health habits as well.  All these stem from the idea of .Health Psychology.

HEALTH PSYCHOLOGY focuses upon how biological, psychological, and social factors affect health and illness. It is a fairly new field because society has become more conscious of being healthy -- whether it pertains to the food we eat, the way our bodies look, or how we feel.  Health Psychology has become so involved in physical health and illness that medical centers become very important employers of psychology majors today. Health psychologists look over patients dealing strategies, modifications to their ill health, and how they view their worth of their only life to live. The main point today is why people do certain things knowing that it can hurt, harm, or damage them in the long run. Such as when obese people eat continually knowing that they have a weight problem and could lead to diabetes.  Why people waste money on a fortune teller, knowing that not everyone could possible know the future.  And why individuals choose to smoke when they know it can adopt cancer or worst death.  These are issues that are special team at Hope Hospital A Hospital for the needs for people with psychology help are here to guide the needs of people in need of help.  And to provide the life line of guides and hope, for anyone that walks through our doors.

For our first assignment with the study of a person who was dealing with Psychological Inhibition our objective was to study the mode for chronic emotion inhibition, and to see how it tied in with the comparison from their childhood, to their current adult hood stages.  Rather it be anything as far as abuse or just emotional distress and dependency.  Many of these can be based off of peoples back ground.  The community, in which they live or used to live in, can play a major role in the psychological aspects of a persons health. In a community there are many characters people that live in the area. Many areas in the city of Chicago rather it be North, South, or west side, each part has a different up bringing for people to learn to grow up and create their own habits. First memories of life where a person can remember playing outside on the playground, or going on vacation with family or even having a girl friend or boy friend for the first time.  Whatever it may be, that effect of a memory from a person could affect their entire mind set as an adult. One day you can remember just enjoying life and never having any worries or fears about anything. And then one day it can all change. The method of curing ones would be to get results from a large number of people who may also have these problems as well.  You can achieve the data through a series of completed self-report questionnaires, by the patients.  We evaluate and compare as not to have the same answers for different problems.  Our results are the findings that strongly supported a model in which a history of childhood emotional withdrawal psychological abuse and parental retribution, minimization, and distress in response to unconstructive emotion, was all associated with chronic emotional inhibition as adults.  Meaning ambivalence over emotional appearance, thought restraint, and avoidant anxiety responses. In turn, emotional inhibition significantly concludes psychological distress, including depression and anxiety symptoms. Conclusion Due to the lack of caring and nurture from an adult figure in life, in inhibitor (patient) may suffer from this longer down the road of life as an adult. Thus also showing that a childhood is very fragile and not meant to used lightly and or taken for granted.  If neglected it would have long term effects on the patient.

The next condition is Dispositional Optimism. The concepts of optimism and pessimism concern peoples expectations for the future. These concepts have ties to centuries of folk wisdom and also to a class of psychological theories of enthusiasm, called expectancy-value theories. Such theories suggest a logical basis for some of the ways in which confidence and cynicism power peoples performance and emotions.  Expectancy-value models begin with the idea that behavior is aimed at attaining desired goals ( HYPERLINK javascripttoggle(ref1) Carver  Scheier, 1998  HYPERLINK javascripttoggle(ref1) xCloseCarver, C. S.,  Scheier, M. F. (1998). On the self-regulation of behavior. New York Cambridge University Press. ). Goals are actions, end-states, or values that people see as being either desirable or undesirable. People try to fit their behavior to what they see as desirable. They try to stay away from what they see as undesirable. Some relation of dispositional optimism to biological endpoints has been discovered. Pessimism was found as items that were a significant forecaster of early mortality among young patients with recurrent cancer. After calculating for site and symptoms, the study of CABG patients, found that pessimists were significantly likely to have urbanized new Q-waves on their (electrocardiograms) as a result of the surgery.  These individuals and were significantly more likely to have a clinically significant release of the enzyme, both markers suggesting that the pessimists were significantly more likely than the optimists during surgery. Relations persisted after controlling for number of grafts optimism significantly predicted the rate of recovery. It was rated by our staff members that the optimists made it faster due to the signs of quick recovery by walking around more frankly and not lying in bed as often.
