Innate Behavior Patterns and Habituation

Considerable advantages in science have been created with the use of animal subjects in animal research. Despite this apparent reality, issues continue to arise between the facilitation and treatment of these animals accordingly. This then has brought about new mandates, legislation and requirements in the facilitation of care and testing. Seeing this, it has brought about new areas in administering proper procedure and fosters increased aspects of responsibility and accountability within the realm of psychological research.

Looking at the current stance, numerous requirements and mandates have been set in proper treatment and care of animal subjects. In particular, the Animal Welfare Act has been in place that caters the provision and development of appropriate actions related to animal handling and testing (USDA, 2009). It corresponds not only to their protection but also in the proper way that they should be dealt with particularly especially in doing research or laboratory procedures.

Under the realm of psychological research, standards and protocols are also initiated to emphasize proper care towards laboratory animal research. This can be characterized from care towards proper implementation of experimental testing. However, there are certain boundaries surrounding this element as it incorporates the value of administering something that would not harm or endanger the life of these animals accordingly (National Academies Press, 1996). Alongside this responsibility is the capacity to provide sufficient and accurate reporting of the procedure that is adherent to professional and legal mandates.

Analyzing the existence of these norms and standards, it can be argued that the facilitation of using animal subjects corresponds to solving science-related questions. However, this act must be practiced carefully. I do believe that having these specific laws and mandates justifies such initiative. Despite these animals capacity to provide new discoveries or address present scientific problems, responsibility and accountability need to continuously be present within this realm. This is to ensure that animal welfare continues to be administered. At the same time, exercising these legalities and effective monitoring via reports creates the necessary foundation in ensuring that a responsible stance be maintained. Thus, I do believe in the relevance of animal testing provided that sufficient and adequate protocols are created to ensure that its facilitation remains congruent to acceptable standards and proposed objectives.
