Code of Ethics and Workplace Policies

This study aims at identifying perceived challenges with regard to the workplace policies, and how these relate with my personal belief system, religious and spiritual framework, as well as my unique background. It further seeks to establish the implication of these policies on the issue of cultural diversity in the workplace. It also seeks to point out circumstances that would lead to the recommendation of a culturally diverse employee to a supervisor. Finally, it seeks to discuss the ethical and legal obligations where no appropriate referral sources exist to deal with workplace problems and incidences.

Challenges arising from Workplace Policies
The policy by the company, that one has to have worked for a number of years in a certain capacity, and in various divisions, before being promoted presents several challenges. The policy states that, All vice presidents should have work experience in each of the companys three divisions (Harvey and Allard, 2008). First, it is unreasonable to deny a qualified person a chance for promotion, simply because that has been the policy for years. When policies are made, they ought to have some exceptional circumstances, because no policy is perfect. It is unfair to ask someone to move to a distant country, without giving due consideration to the family responsibilities that person has, or even the level of qualification for the available job (Harvey and Allard, 2008). Being from an African-American background, it is difficult to isolate this issue from the hard realities of the past.

The code of ethics and policies of this workplace does not reflect an organization that has fully accepted the issue of diversity. This is evidenced by the fact already some employees do not accept a new employee on account of their gender, and cultural background (Harvey and Allard, 2008). This fact is also made clear by the fact that policies are followed rigidly, without considering possibilities of those policies being outdated.

In cases where culturally diverse employees openly declare that they cannot work with other employees on the basis of gender or cultural differences, the best decision would be to refer those employees to the supervisors for further action, because it is both unethical and illegal.

Where no appropriate referral sources exist to deal with workplace problems, the first option would be to share the problem with the person directly in-charge. Ethically, this shows that one does not insubordinate their seniors in any way. Legally, this person can appeal to the appropriate Acts, which deal with the issue at hand. The justice system is available to address such issues, and would come in handy.

Conclusion
As already mentioned, there are various policies, as well as codes of ethical conduct, which govern the relation of employees with each other. At the same time, however, cultural diversities existing in these workplaces do not always allow for the possibility of effectively implementing these codes or policies. The attitudes of the various culturally diverse personalities may be largely to blame for this. The management has the responsibility of ensuring that cultural diversity is appreciated and nurtured in their institutions.

A Response to Lauries Post
Although the learner in this case is under obligation of both the Code of Ethics of the Education Profession and the Code of Ethics for School Counselors, it seems that they have not experienced difficulties as yet, in dealing with the issue of cultural diversity. This is probably because as indicated, the setting in this case is a rural school district a setting which does not offer adequate possibilities for the demands and challenges of diversity. However, one must appreciate the fact that this workplace acknowledges the significance of being culturally diverse, and that the learner in this case is aware of the fact that cultural diversity is not always going to be easy to deal with even in the presence of codes of ethics and workplace policies.

A Response to Melissas Post
This workplace, which is a Jewish preschool, seems to appreciate the importance of diversity. The fact that persons of diverse backgrounds were accepted into this setting attests to this claim. It seems that issues are dealt with appropriately, which also respects cultural differences. Considering that this facility has a religious orientation, it seems to have managed to make effectively incorporate the demands of this religion without having to lock out those with different orientations and backgrounds.
