Integration of Career Counseling and Mental Health Counseling

Several studies have indicted that career and non career issues, such as family or socio-emotional concerns, frequently appear concomitantly in counseling. According to Lucas (1992), career and non career clients encompass similar kind of personal problems. They both experience analogous levels of emotional distress. Additionally, a number of problems presented by clients during career counseling are frequently not career related (Lucas, 1992). Therefore, I completely support the integration of career counseling and mental health counseling, as the integration permits resolution of both clients career and personal issues by the counselors.

Zunker (2005) termed personal problems as part and parcel of career counseling and further added that the two elements are inseparable. In the person environment fit model of career counseling, interactions is emphasized as a multidimensional developmental process which is distinctive to each and every individual. This implies that career development is influenced by factors such as, interrelationships and multitude interactions. The integration enables the clients to make sober, sound, and temperate decisions about their careers as well as acquiring socio-emotional therapy for their personal problems (Zunker, 2005). I intend to apply this fascinating integration in my practice, as this approach will assist me to recognize and address the problems of my clients fully.

Factors such as, client beliefs, emotional problems, and individual existential issues ought to be considered when dealing with career counseling- mental health issues (Lucas, 1992).  These factors assist career counselors in identifying the probable deterrents to finest career choices and thus, leading to effective career counseling.
