Language Development

Research findings explain that there are a number of multiple factors which in one way or another contribute to variations and individual differences in language achievement and reading abilities among learners.  Two of the most thoroughly examined factors among these many are the socioeconomic status of a family and more so the phonological awareness of an individual
(Share  Mathew, 2000).  It is believed that there exists a very strong correlation between the socioeconomic status of a family, the reading ability and the phonological awareness of an individual. Systematically, the socioeconomic status a family influences the nature of the relationship between reading ability and phonological awareness (Smith, 2002).

The socioeconomic status or level of a family is defined by gauging the number of resources which characterize this family. Decreased inability to access adequate yet relevant resources which trigger cognitive growth would greatly amplify the cognitive chances and risks for increased poor decoding (Share  Mathew, 2000).

However, on the other hand, increased access to adequate yet relevant resources for cognitive stimulation may buffer and increase the reading ability skills especially among learners with poor or week phonological awareness.  The socioeconomic status of a family is highly associated with very significant measures of academic achievement and childhood cognitive ability during the childhood years (Smith, 2002).

Language is a component of cognitive achievement as well as the reading ability. Learners from high socioeconomic levels have adequate access to all materials and stimulants for enhancing cognition. They have adequate literature, and parents get adequate time to nurture their growth through positive interactive stimulative activities. Besides, there are their counters who hail from such impoverished environments of poor socioeconomic status which consequently inhibit growth. Thus, it is very correct supported by research findings that there exists a complex synergized kind of a relationship between these three factors.
