Learning intravenous cannulation a comparison of the conventional method and the CathSim ITS
The study that was under consideration in this article is that whether the CathSim training system is better in training nurses perform intravenous cannulation or the traditional plastic arm. This procedure of intravenous cannulation should be carried out very accurately and requires a lot of practice. But nurses do not feel comfortable in practicing on real patients. So these methods are applied to train the nurses to perform intravenous cannulation.
B- Variables
The independent variables of this research were the methods used for training the nurses. It included CathSim ITS and plastic arm method. The performance of the nurses on their real patients in the clinical setting was the dependant variable. The nurses that took part in this study were chosen randomly to perform their observation. They were also divided randomly into two groups to practice cannulation by the two different methods. (Katherine Ka-Pik Chang, 2002)
C-Results
The results were calculated based on the percentage of experienced nurses and the number of registered nurses in each group. Both the groups performed highly successful results on their first client. The control group, nurses trained by the plastic arm, secured a complete 100 whereas experimental group, nurses under CathSim training, was not far behind at 92.86 success. (Katherine Ka-Pik Chang, 2002)
D-Conclusion
In the end of the research, the participants were asked to give their comments to which they replied that both the methodologies were helpful but they still have room for enhancement. They can never be sure of the complications that may arise in real life situations. Many features of the CathSim ITS were appreciated. This gives scientists hope that virtual reality equipment is welcomed for learning and experimenting.
