Psychosocial Approach To Human Development
Infants are busy in their own play and they demand for their motherfather to be around as they take them as a sign of safety for themselves. It is not based on any insecurities perceived from the environment. Security is a natural need that is to be fulfilled at each stage of life even when the personality is actually detached from society and its issues.
Toddlers are involved in their own interests which also involves talking to each other or trying to build communication. They need their caregivers but they also possess a desire to communicate with others around them. Toddlers feel comfortable with similar sex more than opposite sex.
Teenagers are more attracted to opposite sex than to similar sex. When left in groups, they get closer to opposite sex. They do not understand their this attraction and often intend to rush with their motives. Peer pressure is a major influence in teenage. Teenagers will be expressing views and ideas which is often under influenced by peers and beliefs pursued in their groups. They do not tend to realize mostly if the beliefs or action that they are trying to pursue is right or wrong. It becomes a matter of inferiority and superiority for them to not t be able to cope with their on society values.
Adults are concerned about their future. These concerns are governed by values and needs perceived by their society. They will be applying coping mechanisms to cope with the social pressure. It is a self identification stage where people are concerned and confused about their own real identity. They possess a strong belief of their identity while confusion takes over this belief at times creating a blur and psychosocial crisis. In the stage f psychosocial crisis, they need to fight for their own confusions while handling the pressure from society about their identity. It is because the society is a basic structure which applies a force of judgment which has a great effect at this stage of development.
Aged people feel very comfortable among their own age groups. However, this is a stage where an individual surpasses the tension of being rejected due to impulsive teenage beliefs. At this age, the individual understands that the immaturity is a temporary thing and it is a regular part of development. They intend to explain basic life principles based on their own experiences to teenagers. However, they do not intend to force them upon them as they understand the impulsive and rebellious nature of teenage developmental stage.
However, every stage has a few similar characteristics -
They feel comfortable among their own age groups.
They have their own coping mechanisms, which are different at each developmental stage.
Every developmental stage possess different mechanisms. However they are similar for the same developmental stage even if the psychosocial crisis is different.
They are attracted to what seems important to them according their perceived values and beliefs pursued by the society.
They would act under pressure and find relief among their own age groups. However, this mechanism works very differently at each development stage -
Toddlers will find relief among their own sex and feel uncomfortable among opposite sex.
Teenagers will be attracted to opposite sex. Their own peers will remain insignificant to them due to their attraction for opposite sex.
Adults will find it comforting to nurture their partner or to find relief in their nest. this is a developmental stage is nesting where an individual finds mental and physical relief with hisher partner more than his peers.
To understand human behavior at various developmental stages, we need to review basic factors that influence a human mind at different development stages -
Sexuality is one of the major factor that arises from puberty when the teenage has to go through different changes which is very confusing to them.
Society carries beliefs that are based on the beliefs nurtured over ages. They are different in every society. They effect an individuals development stage in a very different way.
Culture cannot be similar. However they pursue strong beliefs in every society, which are even based on blind faith. An individual might feel very comfortable adopting his own culture in hisher life as heshe has lived it from childhood even if the same culture does not makes proper sense in the logical world.
Psychosexual Theory -
Sigmund Freud believed that every action is motivated. This means that before we act over anything we need a self-concept in our minds to shape our beliefs. This self-concept follow up our actions. Sexual drives can be really aggressive. However, they require motivation in their own ways to form different types of beliefs pursued by their society and cultural beliefs.
Psychosexual Theory suggests that to maintain balanced development that would shape their values and behavior, parents should take active steps to help their children understand their hormonal changes. Puberty is a stage od development where the child needs proper guidance to understand what is going on with hisher body as they go through several changes which they cannot understand by themselves. Parents usually shy away in this stage or take their children as too small to understand these things.
It is important to know that at the age of puberty, the parents should start with the basic sex education only, where they do not have to rush explaining their children too much about sexual behavior and desires. However, curiosity is a factor which needs to be satisfied which logical and valid reasons where the child can find himher comfortable enough to confide in someone (that should be a caregiver) to open up with these curiosities. This way they will not divert to find their answers from society among their peers, which are unaware of changes themselves.
Psychosexual desires are one of the primitive thoughts which must be directed in the right path otherwise they shape aggressive behavior among individuals. This aggression ca be found more among males as their libido is more than a female. According to psychosexual motivational theories, aggression is not a first sign of sexual development, where sexuality is ignored. Due to lack of education and motivation, individual try to take immature steps to understand and satisfy their sexual behavior and changes which fills them with guilt factor. Aggression is a coping mechanism when it comes to overcome guilt which arises due to an inappropriate sexual step.
Society and Behavior -
Society shapes different perceptions in our minds which can sink in our beliefs even if they are not true. For example, following a religious ceremony which is not actually orthodox and finding it very an important part of life due to its beliefs in the society.
An individual pick his initial belies from hisher society.
The strong values which are often adopted and carried from ancestors to the descendents are running in the society. Individuals dont feel the pressure to follow them as they become a part of their regular personality as well. Psychosocial theory assumes that at every age an individual is enough in himher to change the way his own development is going on. The development at any stage is not something that can happening under social pressures only. We briefed before, a self-concept is required to adopt anything from the society. Therefore, it is our duty to alter the out self-concept the way it should be altered to pursue a healthy development at all stages.
Culture -
Culture can be the major strong reasons to shape an individuals personality the way they are growing up even if the development is highly orthodox, healthy or unhealthy. Culture is a set a beliefs formed over centuries. Most of these beliefs are believed as they are perceived to be sacred and true due to their history.
Culture has the power to shape an individuals developmental stages and the entire society in a healthy to very unhealthy manner. It is our responsibility to not to follow the culture blindly but to be curious and judge the culture specifics at our individual level properly. We should be aware of what is shaping our personality at each and every developmental stages. Even if we are not aware of the basic science related to our development, we should take care to learn healthy and motivational factors from the society.
Middle Adulthood -
At this development stage, an individual learns to nurture love. Libido is a factor among relationships but caring takes over impulsive desires. The individual wishes to care and make hisher relationship stronger with hisher partner.
The major task that fills hisher head is to work. At this developmental stage, maturity becomes a natural part of life and the person does not wish to argue over general values. Teenagers show their rebellion nature due to their development stage factor of rejection of whatever that does not fits in their set of mind. They may even arguing about their own definition of right and wrong. While in the developmental stage of Middle Adulthood, an individual is aware of the basic necessities of hisher life. Heshe focus on working on them and to nurture hisher love to stay happy.
One of the main feature that comes up at this age Childbearing. It is a very pleasant experience for both male and female in their own different ways. Childbearing can make a person neutral and positive about things that he used to despise in his own childhood. It nurtures our personality with responsibility of loving, caring and raising a child of our own.
The female goes through several emotional and physical changes while bearing a child and nurturing him. A male goes through various changes for his partner to prepare for responsibility that has to come through. The man is not able to picture childbearing at immediate basis. He pictures this through his partner. This main feature of this developmental stage bring a couple really closer. It brings sudden changes of responsibility, care, safety for his partner as well as for the coming child.
An individual has to goes through various crisis among hisher society. However, heshe is accepted as a mature and responsible part of the society at this age.
Conclusion -
In this research , we conclude that society shapes an individuals behavior at all developmental stages. We conclude these effects among every developmental stage by our experiment with a few people interacting with each other in this report. These influence of Psychosocial pressures becomes very clear when we go on understanding them on the basis of behavior and differences at every developmental stage.
An infant is carefree and desires his caregivers presence and touch tp feel secure and happy.
A toddler will desire to explore the world with a belief that it has no boundaries.
A teenager will be impulsive and rebellious about society values. They wish to believe and fight for their own perceived beliefs which are picked from their peers as at this age peer pressure is a major factor effecting this development stage.
An adult is entering the age of maturity and heshe tries to make decisions based on what is required and necessary within the society. They will make mature decisions about their lives.
An aged individual , in middle adulthood a person takes up responsibility for his family. In this is mature enough to enter the enter childbearing.
We conclude that at every stage society is a major factor that influences our developmental stages, behavior, cognition and beliefs. Therefore, it is important to understand what we are perceiving at every developmental stage in order to adopt and develop a healthy and balanced personality through every developmental stage.
