Development of Ethical Standards
The main objectives of the codes of ethics are the following
First, to keep the morals of the members of the professions in carrying out their jobs the Code of Ethics will ensure that members of their profession will not carry out any unacceptable or dishonorable act at work (American Health Information Management Association, 1999, pp. 11 17).
Second, to keep a healthy competition the Code of Ethics will make sure that members will not put their colleagues at a disadvantage just to earn more or to get a promotion (American Health Information Management Association, 1999, pp. 11 17).
Finally, to implement punishments for those who will not follow the Code of Ethics see some members may not really follow rules if there are no recommendation of censure, probation, suspension, etcetera (American Health Information Management Association, 1999, pp. 11 17). This will also make sure that they will not just commit fraud whenever they feel like doing so (American Health Information Management Association, 1999, pp. 11 17).
Role of Ethical Codes in Making Ethical Decisions
Ethical Codes play a large role in making ethical decisions, for instance, if a client was discriminated because of race, the Code of Ethics may be breached and the professional may be sanctioned eventually (American Health Information Management Association, 1999, pp. 11 17). This means that it is not at all difficult to make an ethical decision because it is first of all supported by the Ethical Code of their profession (American Health Information Management Association, 1999, pp. 11 17).
