Cultural diversity in our school system
Despite these challenges, the experience of learning in a multicultural setting is essential as it can prepare a child to work in a multicultural environment. This is especially important in our nation because it is increasingly becoming a multicultural diverse nation. This is a growing trend in our nation and figures by the census bureau suggest that by 2100, the U.S. population of minority population will be around 40. It is in turn necessary that students become skilled at interacting in a culturally diverse setting. It was also noted by jean Snell, a professor of university of Maryland that education in a cultural diverse setting also enhances experience at school by enhancing the richness which develops when students from different cultural backgrounds work together. (Greatschoolsstaff, 2010)
There is a great need for schools to acknowledge cultural diversity and greatschoolstaff, (2010), recommends schools to be proactive in creating an enabling environment in which students and teacher respect each other despite their cultural backgrounds. This can be done through formulating activities that acknowledge diversity like activities which engage every student and in such a way learning from each other that each of them can contribute something valuable. On a positive note the federal no child left behind law has laid a lot of pressure to schools to ensure that all students excel despite their backgrounds and will enhance cultural tolerance within schools (greatschoolstaff, 2010)
