Types of Intelligence and intelligence testing
The eight different types of intelligences
Linguistic intelligence (word smart) is the ability to use words fluently to deliver information. People with these skills can tell stories fluently, write essays and participate in interviews. Additionally, these individuals converse easily with peers. These skills are displayed by people who have a desire to talk with people and who have a good flow of words in their speech. They like addressing people and making comments about people and situations (Wagman, 1996).
Logical (mathematical) intelligence involves numberreasoning smart skills. Individuals with logical skills can solve complicated mathematical problems, balance checkbooks, create schedules and perform other activities which require a lot of reasoning. The greatest mathematicians, accountants, physicians and other careers that require mathematical reasoning have this kind of skills (Wagman, 1996).
Spatial intelligence is the ability to draw pictures, designs and other works of art. People with these skills can paint, draw, make cards and do many other art works. In addition, they also create logos, route maps, and design web pages among others. The field of architecture is comprised of people with such skills. They have a clear map of their minds and create works that display a lot of artistic knowledge (Wagman, 1996).
Bodily (kinesthetic) intelligence involves the ability to make vigorous body movement. This kind of intelligence is displayed by people who like sports, enjoy body movement and walking. Such kinds of people are able to notice body language easily. The use of bodily skills to perform activities is encouraged to people with such skills (Wagman, 1996).
Musical intelligence-music smart. Is the ability to play music and instruments. People with such skills are able to learn musical words easily and can sing along with other people. They have a desire to attend concerts, hum melodies and they enjoy rhythms. Such kinds of individuals have a strong desire to be musicians and they strive to mimic great musicians (Wagman, 1996).
Interpersonal intelligence-people smart. This is the ability to have social connections with people whom a person knows and that heshe does not know. People with these skills can hold conversations with different people from different backgrounds. They easily make friends with new people and find no difficult in making people feel fun of their environment (Wagman, 1996).
Intrapersonal intelligence (self smart) is a skill that person posses such that heshe can keep a personal record of activities that he is doing or expecting to do in the future. Such kind of people can perform duties on their own without the help of someone since they have a plan of everything they are doing. Individuals with these skills meditate, read alone and they study to answer personal questions (Wagman, 1996).
Naturalist intelligence (nature smart) skills require a person to be responsive to the nature and the environment that surrounds himher. These skills enable a person to collect specimens and study them keenly, follow animal movements and take photographs about the landscape. People with these skills carry out extensive research about their environment and ensure they have answers to whatever makes up nature. They like living in natural settings and take pictures of different landscapes and fascinating events (Wagman, 1996).
The value of intelligence testing
Intelligence testing helps determine the activities that a person can perform best. It is a good measure when determining the best career that a person wants to join. Children do IQ test to know their talents so as to allow them acquire skills relevant to their ability (Pintner, 1923).
The IQ tests measures different aspects of a person relating to hisher reception to various stimuli and activities. Different scales are identified to show the character of individuals. The aspects measured are speech, cognitive skills, and other standard questions which are intended to capture the attributes of a person (Pintner, 1923).
Controversies found with intelligence tests
Different theorists have tried to explain the behavior of people so as to come up with a standard definition of human behavior. All these theories are not valid since people are unique and behave differently according to the prevailing conditions. IQ tests are standard questions which were established to know the different intelligence levels of people. These questions do not display the actual character of people since there are many factors which contribute to intelligence. People in different environments will respond differently to the same questions. Thus, these questions have no uniform answer (Pintner, 1923).
Conclusion
People were created unique and different. Different types of intelligence give a standard classification of skills and abilities that people have. These can be used to define the characteristics of an individual. There are different ways of reasoning that people have which are influenced by many factors. The intelligence tests give the IQ levels of people according to standardized questions. The IQ shows the intelligence level of a person.
